My career began in the Hickman Mills CSD1 district where I taught elementary music for 6 years with principals Dr. Orville Emanuel and Dr. Bobby Gines at Ingels Elementary. I continued to the middle-school level teaching at Ervin Middle for 8 years encountering a steady stream of musically and academically BRILLIANT young people who are still making great marks and strides to this day. The Center District experience taught me the tough lesson that when the economy goes bad, even teachers enmasse can be negatively affected by "financial fall-out". While in the KCMS district, I had the blessing of seeing the gamut of needy children being served and needy children being propelled beyond expectations. Teaching music at The Afrikan Centered Education Collegium Campus (ACECC) was an opportunity to see the results of providing truly culturally relevant education that accepted children from wherever they came and channeled them through an experience of "knowing" the true length/distance of their cultural past and gaining the skills to propel them, equipped and confident into the unknown of the future.
