    We opened our first food production unit near Heathrow Airport in 1985 originally with the idea of only making charcuterie style products and servicing the in-flight catering sector, however demand quickly changed that and we also started making all our own pastry, fish and vegetarian products, used every style of cooking and food preparation technique available and also prepared finished plated meals on china.We were very successful and expanded until we had 47000 sq ft of kitchen production and storage space and employed 150 people and had achieved the maximum BRC grade.Our customer base was diverse and spread across luxury cruise liners, corporate events of every description, first class rail catering, in-flight catering and the hospitality and food service industry. We also supplied to various multiple retailers most notably achieving at one time thirty four lines in Waitrose and having our special Christmas game pies advertised on TV. We were also food production partners for McCain Foods for whom we built a state-of-the-art production unit.We achieved many 'firsts' perhaps the most memorable of which was preparing finger food for 13000 people to celebrate PM Blair's Milleneum 2000 New Year's Eve Party at The Dome (O2) venue.The success of the Bartholdi business was born out of the values which I hold to be most important and were encompassed by all the staff working in the company, these being to be totally reliable and honest, paying attention to quality and detail, operating hygienically and cleanly and allowing people to develop from within the company.

    I was brought up in the family food business which was a Swiss food restaurant, butchery and delicatessen started in 1928 by my grandfather and located in the heart of London's West End.Having to work school holidays and weekends whenever possible I learned all about Swiss style butchery, producing lovely charcuterie, smoking and curing meat before I had even left school. At the age of 22 and due to my father's ill health I took over control of the business which was in serious decline.At first the retail side of the business was the focus of my attention and through sheer hard work and enthusiasm coupled with a passion for good food and common sense the business became very successful.We employed Swiss, German and French butchers and charcutiers and working with them and with the knowledge I already had I created products and ideas which were to become very successful within a short time. It is true to say that I was mostly self-taught and I spent most of my time researching and practicing cooking techniques.The smell of the oak and beech wood smoking the food in the basement smoke kiln permiated the whole building and added a unique quality to the whole aura of the shopOnce the retail trade was successful I then concentrated on selling our products into the catering trade and again became very successful to the point that we needed to expand into separate premises. In 1985 I opened our first catering production unit near Heathrow Airport.

    I was being trained as 'a new breed of manager' to control major out of town shopping centres which were in the relatively early stages of development at that time. Allied Suppliers was the parent company and largest multiple retailer in the UK with the brand 'Liptons' and had the largest supermarket in England.
