My research focuses on the development of peptide inhibitors against intracellular cancer targets such as the pro-survival BCL-2 family proteins and its optimization for intracellular delivery.• Developed potent peptide inhibitors of pro-survival BCL-2 family members with high in vitro efficacy.• Optimized high-throughput assays for characterizing efficacies of the peptide inhibitors.• Collaborating with scientists from academia to develop and test a delivery system involving polymeric nanoparticles for intracellular targeting of the peptide inhibitors.• Collaborating with a research team in industry to test an alternative strategy for intracellular delivery by conjugating the peptide inhibitors to cyclic cell penetrating peptide tags.

My research has been focused on understanding the structural organization of the oligomeric pore formed by the pro-apoptotic BCL-2 family protein, BAK, on the mitochondrial outer membrane. Formation of the BAK apoptotic pore releases cellular constituents into the cytosol activating a cascade of downstream events that ultimately lead to cell death. Dysregulation of this process contribute to various human diseases ranging from cancer, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency to neurodegenerative diseases. The structural and biochemical insights from this study could potentially identify therapeutic agents that can directly regulate this pore forming machinery.
