In April 2015 I founded a small consulting firm in Zambia. I wanted to have engagements that excite me and broaden my path of personal development and growth. Tukumuka means expansion/growth and we help owner-managers of small firms to grow their business. Over the last 8 years I have developed our footprint in Zambia through various engagements, and we are offering 3 distinct services:- consulting, training, coaching and financial management for owner-managed small firms (SMEs)- collaboration with private sector development organisations with a focus on SMEs- consulting for microfinance institutions with focus on SME lending

In 2012 FINCA Zambia was a credit-only MFI and I transformed the institution into a deposit-taking financial institution with a focus on customer service. 14 branches were refurbished or newly established and the loan portfolio tripled under my leadership. We focussed on SME loans, savings products, agency banking and partnered with local microinsurance providers. In 2014 we changed the operating software to Flexcube and started mobile money operations. We had 500+ employees, 46,000 borrowers and a loan portfolio of ~16mio USD. I was also member of the Advisory Board for the FINCA Intl. Development Academy and contributed to the global staff development of FINCA.

FIDES AG managed a project (Koshi Yomuti = Banking under the tree) in rural Namibia which provided access to loans for women-groups. Because the project had a positive impact on vulnerable rural communities in Namibia, FIDES wanted to increase their impact by introducing saving products and thus needed the banking license from the Bank of Namibia. I prepared all documents for the license application, and we started operating as a microfinance bank in 2010. The bank established three branches with banking operations and started lending to small businesses (SMEs) under my leadership. I was responsible for 80 employees, standardisation of processes, capacity building of personnel and underwriting loans. Trustco Group Holdings Limited purchased the bank in 2014.

Sikaman Savings & Loans Company was in its second year of operations when I joined the team as bank manager. My first assignment was to manage the main branch of the microfinance institution, supervise cash operations and build the capacity of loan officers. Once I had successfully coached a successor (local female) I was assigned Credit Manager and supervised the lending operations across several branches, my focus was to improve the credit approval process, build the capacity of loan officers so that they can take up a supervisory role, and start lending to larger enterprises (SMEs). Once I had successfully coached a successor, I was assigned Deputy General Manager and apart from supervising cheque clearing, cash and customer service operations, I focussed on process efficiency and standardisation. During my assignment I also headed the institution’s branch expansion programme which involved market surveys and the construction/rehabilitation of branch buildings. In 2004 the credit-only institution started savings operations and changed the name to ProCredit SLC Ghana.

Aug 2002 - Feb 2003
I trained loan officers of MEB Banka in SME lending and my focus was on the assessment of financial performance of SMEs that have incomplete accounting records, no clear investment proposal, insufficient financial information and thus considered high risk for the bank. From November 2002 I managed the bank’s branch in Brcko and supervised the establishment of a new branch in Bjelina. By the time I was assigned to Ghana, I had successfully coached my successors in both branches.

I was seconded by the German Development Service (Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst) to Kasama School for Continuing Education in Zambia.I initiated the establishment of production units (Home Economics, Carpentry & Joinery, Commercial Skills) at the vocational training institute and thus the training period was extended from 15 to 30 months, students were exposed to customers and markets and the revenue that was generated supported the training unit so that they could repair tools, machines, and purchase materials.I promoted the change from government dependency to a market-driven approach of skills training successfully and we established Bricklaying & Plastering as a new training unit. The project was successfully handed over to the Ministry of Education at the end of 1998.In 1998 I was teamleader for vocational training in Zambia.
