    Research Advisor: Burjor Captain, Associate Professor, University of MiamiThesis Title: Synthesis and characterization of high nuclearity bimetallic group 8-group 10 transition metal cluster complexes• Synthesized and characterized 24 new bimetallic potential heterogeneous catalysts• Designed & developed six new nickel-iron and five new nickel-ruthenium bimetallic molecular cluster complexes to serve as molecular precursors to new nanoparticle catalysts for the applications in the industrially important hydrogenation processes• Improved the selectivity of the conversion to dimethylfuran (DMF), which is a potential liquid transportation fuel, from hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), by using newly prepared Pt-Ru-Sn trimetallic molecular cluster precursor• Prepared seven novel ruthenium carbonyl cluster complexes containing sterically encumbered tertiary butyl germyl ligand• Synthesized six new ruthnium carbonyl cluster complexes containing platinum metal with the air sensitive bulky carbene ligand • Characterized all new cluster complexes structurally using single crystal X-Ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) and elemental analysis• Prepared silica support of the bimetallic cluster compounds for the catalysis study• Served as Laboratory Safety Officer (2010-2013): Oversaw the safety activities of the laboratory, Enforced daily safety practices, Managed annual chemical inventory and obtained MSDS as needed, Documented all safety related activities, Conducted chemical waste pick up• Supervised and mentored undergraduate and incoming graduate students in their research
