IN A TIME LONG GONE our pre-historic ancestors used a symbol-based form of writing to record events, convey messages and, notably, tell their stories. At the time they must have dreamt about generations to come reading these stories that were meticulously crafted on silent, age-old rocks. Symbols were either painted onto the rocks in red ochre, black, white or yellow dye as “pictographs” or carved, chiselled, scraped or ground into the rock face with stone tools as “petroglyphs”. SUMIGLYPHS was born as a modern day rock art form by a talented South African artist who carries within her the same ancestral dream of preserving present-day stories in a unique art form that can be read by future generations. The name SUMIGLYPHS was derived from the name of the artist, SUMI, and the words “petroglyphs” and “myths”. As ancient rock art tells old stories of a mythical time gone by, the modern rock art of SUMIGLYPHS tells new stories in a mythical form which will endure for ages to come. Neither language nor culture can obscure the powerful and magical stories told in the unique modern rock art of SUMIGLYPHS.
