My main area of responsibility is to manage the suspended ceiling, partition and fire protection work, although I also help to manage other building contracts of a more general nature ranging from external ground works to interior re-fits. I joined Seisdon Solutions after Design Contract Interiors Limited closed down in April 2012, bringing established business (mainly suspended ceiling, partition and fire protection related) from existing customers who were very happy to continue using "my" services in my new role at another company. As with Design Contract Interiors I supply a complete service for customers requiring quotations or the installation of suspended ceilings, partitions and fire protection. My initial involvement in a project can begin at different stages of the tender process, depending on the size and type of contract. In some cases I will be asked to help with specifying all elements of a project based on customer requirements, so for instance designing and quoting to build a fire rated room or suspended ceiling, or perhaps the same but with sound proofing more of a priority than fire rating. Once exact needs have been defined I prepare a detailed quotation for the customer so that they have a clear understanding of what I have costed for.At other times I am asked to tender from professionally produced plans and specifications for jobs ranging from small works up to six figure contracts. Usually I start by assessing whether a pre-tender site visit is required and arranging that if so, but always preparing the tender promptly and within deadline. When successful with a tender I become responsible for organisation and delivery of the project. This entails liaising with all stakeholders from my customer to the building owners and people affected by the work, including formulating RAAMs. I ensure that materials are purchased at best price, delivered as required and then installed as per manufacturers instructions and customer requirements.

    • Contracts Manager
      • Sep 1997 - Jul 2002

Initially I started as a Contracts Manager for small building works etc, but in 1998 we were approached to join a network of builders providing priority building service to insurance companies for policy claims. Insurers included Norwich Union and Lloyds TSB and the work was to be quoted using a bespoke software system supplied by a company called Property Solutions, based in Croydon but emanating from Canada. After undertaking the training I managed this part of the business until I left Carpvale in 2002. Having received details of a claim I would visit site within 2 or 3 days and assess the damage, which could vary from a broken hand basin to a completely devastated home after a flood or a fire. Having carried out a survey I would then compile a quotation using the set rates within the software system before submitting a detailed report and appropriate photographs. With some customers my reports were trusted to the degree that they chose not to send a loss adjuster.Once claims were agreed between insurer and policyholder I would then manage the remedial work which was never invoiced without us having received a signed satisfaction note from the property owner.

    • Ceiling and Partition Fixer (self employed)
      • Jun 1994 - Sep 1997
      • Various

After leaving Industrial Contractors I returned to "the tools" prior to being offered a Contracts Manager's job at Carpvale (1995) Limited. On the whole I was supplying labour only working all over the UK. In 1995 I was asked by a customer to carry out some emergency remedial work to the Burgess clip in ceiling in the Operating Theatre at the Nuffield Hospital in Wolverhampton, which was undergoing a major refurbishment. Having remedied problems (poor installation) and finished work in this area my customer was asked by the senior Tarmac site managers to retain me for phases two and three. Thereafter I carried out all of the ceiling and partition installation myself, but I also managed the ordering of materials, submission of daywork claims and all site based administrative costs relating to this work myself so I was, in effect, also the contracts manager.

    • Ceiling and Partition fixer/ Estimator
      • Apr 1984 - Jun 1994
      • Kidderminster based business

Beginning work in 1984 I operated as a ceiling and partition fixer until around 1992 when I was offered a role as an estimator with a view to becoming contracts manager, a plan truncated when the company decided to concentrate solely on asbestos removal in mid 1994.During my time at Industrial Contractors Limited I worked on many projects all over the UK installing suspended ceilings, all types of partitions, fire protection and factory lining and, occasionally, raised floors. This work was undertaken in all sizes of premises from car factories (MG Rover at Longbridge, Canley etc) and nuclear power stations (Windscale as it was then called) to small offices and even private homes.

  • General Accident Insurance
    • Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton
    • Clerk, Life Department
      • Mar 1983 - Mar 1984
      • Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton

Carrying out clerical duties in a busy life department using manual and early computer filing systems to deal with claims, lapsed and new policies. Also liaising with Insurance Brokers. Resigned as I was given the opportunity to return to the building trade which, at the time, I preferred to being entirely office based.

  • Thompson Insulation Services

    • Ceiling and Partition Fixer's Mate
      • Jul 1982 - Feb 1983
      • Park Lane, Cradley Heath, West Midlands

Having finished my A levels I was asked to help out on a large Suspended Ceiling, Lining and Partition contract at Canley (British Leyland) in Coventry. Here I learned the rudiments of a lot of aspects of the ceiling/ partition trade all on one job, as well as how builders interact as a team (I recall that there were usually between 8 and 16 men on this contract). The contract was completed at the end of 1982 but I was retained although only until Thompson Insulation Services went into Voluntary Liquidation in February 1983. One of the large rooms that we built is seen on this TV commercial.
