As the son of 2nd generation business owner I was put to work as soon as I could follow instructions, As soon as I could walk, I remember riding out with my dad to Fort Stockton to deliver water on a weekend and I would carry empties back and load them onto the truck from there pushing broom and misc warehouse work prior to my employee hire date. when I officially went on the books as a full time employee when out of school or football, including ice and snow days. My first on the books job was on the one gallon bottling line. I would take bags of 1 gallon bottles and put them 6 at a time into metal crates and run them through the bottling line. A good day I could run 2000 crates through the line. I would be tasked with most any job that was needed so they didnt have to pull someone off the production line which would slow that process. I built pallets with nail guns, cut the screw necks off of 5 gallon glass bottles so that newer push to seal caps would fit on them. I drove forklift loading and unloading trucks or moving material around or out of the way and spent some time working on the 5 gallon bottling line. As I got bigger and stronger and could heft and carry a plastic and glass 5 gallon bottle, I was able to graduate out of the warehouse and started working as a swamper (assistant) for delivery drivers that needed some help on larger or unique routes. Sometimes that meant working with the delivery driver whose route was grocery stores, sometimes the downtown office building routes, or making a refinery run over the weekend if the refinery did not have enough water to get through the weekend. I learned to drive heavy manual transmission trucks, had to push start one, once or twice. In addition I would restock our shelves at a couple grocery stores, late Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon otherwise the shelves would be empty most the weekend.
