I provided technical support to Senior Research Scientists at Tessa Therapeutics R&D Department. Our work focused on developing new genetic modifications for T cells to be used as cancer immunotherapy. In support of that program:• I carried out experiments in all steps of the development process including molecular cloning, cell culture, virus production and transduction, PBMC isolation, flow cytometry, and cell-based assays. • I contributed to data analyses, report writing, and presentations. • I also played key roles in laboratory operations management including being the lab’s authorized purchaser and • I was also responsible for maintaining the database registry of donor and patient blood samples.

I provided technical support for the research team led by Dr Chris Dawson and previously by Prof Lawrence Young, whose research focuses on investigating the role of Epstein Barr virus (EBV) in the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). I have also provided technical support to other research teams lead by Prof Paul Murray and Prof Ciaran Woodman with whom Dr Chris Dawson collaborated in the areas of gastric and vulval cancers. This involved providing technical support for postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and assisting both short-term project and work experience students during their assignment in the lab as well as generating data for scientific papers and grant applications. Another key duty involved the day-to-day management of the laboratories, where I was responsible for budget management, product ordering and stocktaking. Summary of duties:• To design, plan and execute experiments under the direction of the project supervisor.• To maintain comprehensive records of experimental work to ensure that work can be repeated and validated.• To prepare experimental results, present them appropriately and discuss the aims of the project with the supervisor and other members of the research group.• To keep up-to-date with the theoretical knowledge underpinning my areas of technical expertise.• To instruct new staff and students in techniques and protocols as appropriate.• To share responsibility for the research group’s budget, by organising the charging of expenditure to appropriate accounts, contributing to decisions on the most economical offer when ordering certain products using direct experience of different products.• Meeting with sales representatives and initiating enquiries on consumables and equipment purchasing.

Under the supervision of Prof Colin Robinson, I developed my own independent research project in the area of protein targeting, studying the “un-assisted” pathway of protein transport across biological membranes. This involved the use of “in vitro” translated proteins import assays. The project was funded by the EU and was part of a European Network working on the “molecular dissection of photosystem I structure, function and biogenesis”, which allowed the collaboration with researchers from other countries to discuss the best approach to a problem, either theoretical or technical. As part of the Network programme I attended annual conferences, gave oral presentations and wrote short progress reports for the Network Newsletter, carried out work in other labs (Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, KVL – Copenhagen) and attended spectroscopy and electron microscopy mini-courses.
