    • Copy Editor
      • Dec 2015 - Present

As one of four copy editors, I spend one night each week on desk copy editing stories that have been sent to me from the news, arts, sports and op-ed desk editors, checking to make sure there are no factual or AP style errors.

    • Assistant News Editor

As assistant news editor, I write at least one article per week for the news section. I spend one night each week on desk, editing submissions from other staff writers and correspondents, and laying out the newspaper using Adobe InDesign. I also pitch story ideas to writers during weekly meetings.Below, you can read one of my recent articles about a Bernie Sanders rally at UMass, for which I also took photos.

    • Freelance Writer
      • May 2015 - Present

After interning with Beetle Press, Janice decided to keep me on as a freelance writer. I continue to write press releases and blog posts for Beetle Press clients, as well as for Janice's second business, The Creative. I also send out monthly e-newsletters for both businesses.

    • Intern
      • Jan 2015 - May 2015

Beetle Press is a public relations and communications firm. I wrote press releases, articles and e-newsletters under the supervision of my boss, Janice. Because of her media connections, our work was often featured in The Republican and The Daily Hampshire Gazette. I was also responsible for uploading our work to Janice's two websites, janicebeetle.com and beetlepress.com, and I oversaw the business' Facebook page.

  • Daily Hampshire Gazette
    • Northampton, Massachusetts
    • Intern
      • Sep 2015 - Dec 2015
      • Northampton, Massachusetts

At the Daily Hampshire Gazette, I worked under the supervision of Arts Editor Kathy Mellen. Because Kathy is in charge of the arts section of both the Gazette and the Amherst Bulletin, as well as the publication of the weekly magazine Hampshire Life, my pieces were distributed to multiple publications. I worked on 350-word briefs that were completed in a couple of hours, all the way up to 2,000-word features that required substantial reporting time. I also regularly accompanied a photographer into town to talk to people on the street about their unique fashion for Hampshire Life's "Style Stop" section. Lastly, I combed through press releases to organize "Keeping Tabs on the Arts," an events calendar published in the Gazette every Thursday.

Western Mass Women's Magazine publishes every other month, focusing on subjects that would be of interest to women in the Pioneer Valley. I typically wrote three articles per issue on subjects like fashion and health. I was also tasked with overseeing the Sassy Gal blog on the magazine's website, where I would publish opinion pieces, baking recipes, fashion tips and more twice each week (check it out using the link below). I assisted with photo shoots, reaching out to businesses for advertising revenue and scholarship funds, and organizing the magazine's annual Women to Watch event, where 25 local women are recognized for their achievements.

      • University of Massachusetts Amherst

Each June, every state conducts research on traffic patterns. I was one of six research assistants who traveled the state of Massachusetts to retrieve data. At selected locations, we observed drivers and passengers from the side of the road and recorded their behavioral patterns and demographic information on tablets. Most specifically, we focused on whether or not people wore they seat belts and whether or not they were using their phones. Our research, which involved long days of driving, made it possible to determine the percentage of people in Massachusetts who wear their seat belts.
