As the Director of the Victorian operations of a national mid-sized union, I manage a team of industrial relations professionals and oversee the industrial and organising activities of the Union throughout the state. Professionals Australia (PA) represents the industrial interests of professionals including Engineers, Pharmacists, Scientists, Managers, Architects and Translators and Interpreters. PA members work in broad array of industries in both the private and public sectors, including power/electricity, manufacturing, rail and transport, water, construction, health and local/state/federal government. Key duties include:- Leading the Victorian team, directing its operations, driving change and improved performance.- Contributing to PA’s national leadership team.- Developing and delivering a state plan and activities to support PA’s objectives at the state level, especially organising and industrial strategies and campaigns. - Working closely and collaboratively with PA’s elected officials and committees.- Developing, coaching, and mentoring staff.- Undertaking advocacy on behalf of PA and its members in a range of settings.- Building relationships with other unions.- Managing relationships with employer representatives, industry, and government agencies- Representing PA members in Industrial Tribunals and Courts.- Negotiating enterprise agreements and resolving workplace issues and disputes.- Supporting a healthy and safe workplace and a diverse and inclusive workforce.

As the Industrial Manager of a state branch of the Health Services Union, I managed the Union’s Industrial Department and Industrial Officers and had oversight of the Union’s industrial relations and advocacy within Victoria. Key duties included:- Overseeing the Union’s industrial strategy and its implementation.- Leading enterprise bargaining negotiations and campaigns across various health, hospital, aged care and community sectors.- Representing the Union and its members in the Fair Work Commission, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Federal Circuit Court. This included a broad range of industrial matters including: unfair dismissal, disputes in accordance with dispute settlement procedures, general protections, enterprise bargaining related disputes, industrial action, recovery of underpayments, right of entry disputes and discrimination claims.- Developing and delivering internal training on industrial and workplace relations matters.- Participating in classification reviews and major workplace change processes. - Participating more broadly in the management of the Union, including performing the role of Executive Advisor as an ex-officio member of the National Executive of the HSU.
