    • Work Inspiration week
      • Jul 2011 - Aug 2011
      • Manchester, United Kingdom

The work inspiration programme lasted for 2 weeks and gave me a real insight into television production. I gained lots of skills and experience relating to the television industry. The work placement also enabled me to achieve an understanding of several aspects within the television industry from technical roles to production management, compliance, scheduling and global entertainment. During the 2 weeks, we worked on the Jeremey Kyle set and produced our own 5 minute shows. We split into 3 groups and I took the roles of lighting director and set up the ques for the first insert, the floor manager for the second and the director for the third. This particular session enabled me to gain practical experience and understand the various production roles involved in studio production. We learnt about post production, this involved online and offline editing, audio dubbing and adding sound effects. This session was useful because it demonstrated the editing process from the beginning until the tapes were transmitted to the broadcaster. This also showed us which editing software is used in the television industry. We also observed film units and the various production roles in action such as assistant directors, sound recordists, boom operators, camera operators and art directors. This gave us an in depth insight into how a production team work in order to produce a drama such as coronation street. We also attended a coronation street production management workshop which allowed us to understand how each day of filming a drama is scheduled. Pro vision held a camera demonstration and taught us all about focus pulls, how to use the camera in terms of manual and automatic settings, adjusting audio levels and white balance. We also had the chance to produce and edit our own chat show. I took on the role of director. We also saw Tony Morris (one of the presenters from Granada Reports) present the 2' 0 clock news, live from the studio.

In 2010 I shadowed a lighting technician at the Oldham Coliseum in the build up to the performance of Kes. I observed the lighting plotting session, the technical rehearsals and the dress rehearsal. This gave me an opportunity to see the building blocks of production, from the creative process through to the finished product. In 2008, I spent a week at the Oldham Coliseum learning about the various production aspects. We found out about the different job roles involved in theatre such as production manager, lighting and sound technicians, make up artists, set designers, ect. Paul David Gough, (actor) told us how to start a career in acting, We attended a session on stage make up and made our own scars and bruises, We directed our own 5 minute production, a stage manager told us how they contribute to the production, lighting technicians showed us how they create effects and we controlled the lights on the lighting board. We also attended a session on technical stage management where we were shown how they rigg lights and equipment. We learnt how a set is created and how it transforms from the original design to the stage and we also had a talk on marketing.Theatre Experience Week gave me a real insight into the production aspects of theatre.
