City Planning Studios I & II – (8/10 – 5/11)Provided graduate students instructions to utilize methods and techniques of basic data collection, synthesis, and analysis in the process of formulating comprehensive plan development. The courses also allowed students to immerse into the realm of professional planning by allowing them to apply the skills and knowledge that was developed in coursework in the Master’s program. The studio context allowed students to work with a client and multiple stakeholders to create a plan that addressed a problem or opportunity in the city or metropolitan region. I guided students through all aspects of the planning process, including problem definition, creating goals and objectives, designing and carrying out field study, gathering and analyzing data; soliciting, mediating among and weighing the interests of stakeholders; developing recommendations and implementation strategies and producing a plan document and presentation. In May 2011, the Studio I class developed a community profile report for the Historic East Towson-African-American community in Baltimore County, Maryland. In December 2010 the Studio II class developed a Transit Oriented Development Plan for the Suitland Community in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Municipal Finance & Budgeting Summer Session I (5-15 -7-15)Provided class instructions that examined financial issues of federal, state and local governments, and various financing techniques that support planning programs. The class provided an understanding of issues that enables planners to better identify factors of urban decline, fiscal distress, erosion of public service, and population flight. Such understanding also helps to prepare more appropriate mitigation programs. In addition the class provided financing techniques available in planning implementation such as the development of public facilities, affordable housing, the building of mixed used development, and efforts of improving livability
