Historian at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, but working in Anchorage. Hired to do research on historic structures at Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, I used this research to write National Register Nominations for six buildings in Skagway and Dyea townsite. One of these buildings was Jefferson "Soapy" Smith's saloon--later a museum devoted to the gold rush and Soapy. As well I wrote the Historic Structure Reports on these buildings and the Historic American Building Survey histories. I also researched and wrote National Register nominations for the original ranger cabin at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and a cabin dating to the founding of Chitina, Alaska. This last developed some interesting details, as the cabin had been named after the Orr Stage Company. My research showed it was owned by the local manager, J.C. Martin, not by the stage company. So it has been renamed the J.C. "Jesse" Martin Cabin. With all of these structures I also did much of the HABS photography required for submission to the Historic American Building Survey. In connection with this work, I've presented programs on preservation for several local organizations and a broadcast for KSKA radio. I also wrote a brief article for Alaska Magazine describing the work done on Soapy's Saloon in Skagway. Research done on the Frye-Bruhn Company's cold storage building in Skagway led to a trip to the Frye Museum in Seattle. The museum's endowment came from the profits of this company made during the Klondike Gold Rush. The curator was intrigued with our research, helped us a lot and brought this project to the attention of the exhibits director. The director had scheduled an exhibit of the museum's Alaska collection that summer, 2010, liked the idea of a display of the building in Skagway and a description of the stabilization and rehabilitation of this 1900 structure. The museum added a hall length display based on my photographs and research.
