Group Leader:Remediation
-
Aug 2004 - Oct 2008
Responsible for setting up the Remediation Group at the BHP Billiton Johannesburg Technology Centre to address environmental issues within the BHPB Customer Sector Groups on a global basis. The role required continuous research and development into all aspects of environmental liabilities to ensure sustainable solutions were developed for implementation based on sound business principles which could ultimately be handed over to the community upon closure. Projects included sustainable rehabilitation of mined land including biodiesel production from crops grown on rehabilitated land, sequestration of CO2 with the generation of saleable products, phytoremediation options for metal uptake as well as management of excess water and evaluation of water treatment technologies. Effective water management and identification of appropriate water treatment technologies for potential implementation were a major focus due to the liabilities associated with water. Passive treatment of mine impacted water with sulphate removal was developed to the point of demonstration scale implementation at an operating coal site. Several of the projects produced patents one of which is implemented in the gold mining industry.Participation in BHPB HSEC and ISO 14001 audits at various sites.
