    SparkLiv Foundation is a social impact (Section 8) company based in Lucknow (India). SparkLiv works with youth on road safety. Under our Youth4Change programme, we run dedicated projects named "Road-Wise" on road safety with school and college students.Our vision is to "broaden the role of children and youth in social development". Our mission is to partner schools/colleges in Uttar Pradesh and to work with students (6-25 yrs) on hands-on projects and education programmes.

    At MicroSave, I was working as a Senior Manager (Specialist) in 'Digital Financial Services' domain, where I was leading the 'Banks and Product Development' practice group. I was playing the role of a DFS strategy, operations and technology solutions consultant, and led development finance advisory projects with government agencies, banks, agent network managers, technology service providers, micro finance institutions, international donor agencies and financial services partners in India, Kenya, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia. My key responsibilities included business development and reporting, programme planning and execution, client and team management.

    The topic of this project was “IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF MICRO ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT ON WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT-A STUDY OF SEWA-LUCKNOW”. Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Lucknow is an autonomous organization of Chikan artisans. SEWA-Lucknow was set up based on a UNICEF sponsored study conducted in 1979 on the condition of Chikan artisans. The study established that over 40,000 Chikan artisans working in and around Lucknow were highly exploited in the industry even as middlemen made hay. As a result, Chikan artisans lived in shanty localities and suffered from poverty; they and their offspring were illiterate; and their families had poor health. Children were the worst sufferers as poverty paved its way for them to go through pains of malnutrition, unhygienic living conditions and illiteracy. For family’s survival, extra earning became a need and the children became a victim of circumstances as they were dragged to work. Since 1979 there were constant interactions with the community for understanding the need of becoming self-reliant as well as a support for the earning members in the family. The objective of taking up this impact assessment project was to focus on how the objectives laid down by SEWA Lucknow are being achieved and whether it is enhancing empowerment among women (physical, social, economic, political etc.) and improving gender relations. Alongside, it was also used as a platform to understand the working of SEWA as a social enterprise and how it works to attain self sustainability while working on mainstreaming deprived women and empowering them.
