Working at North York General taught me how to adapt on a fast pace unit. Patient turnarounds and admissions were quite frequent and time management was a skill that was definitely improved working on this unit. I was able to use emergency nursing interventions with clients that were actively dying and learned how to appropriately act in emergency situation. Learning to delegate tasks and getting the health care team to get involved is another thing I learned to do. Working as a team collectively on this unit has taught me that there is no need to deal with everything on your own, and that it is much better to work holistically as a team. Some core nursing skills that are used often on this unit are IV care, blood transfusions, injections, narcotics, wound care, and family/client centered care. Summery:Oncology/ Medicine Unit- Specialized in palliative care/ end of life- strengths in therapeutic communication/ working with families, teaching them about end of lifeexpectations and care.- fast pace unit with quick patient turn-arounds

Working on an oncology unit was a very sobering experience. This was my first clinical experience dealing with death and dying on a daily basis. Many of the clients on the unit were DNR so I quickly needed to adapt and learn comfort/pain management. The shift of care went from rehabilitation to making sure the clients are always pain free and have complete autonomy in all of their health decisions. Working so closely with family members taught me to include everyone in the plan of care, not just the health care team. I learned that a more holistic approach with many forms of input is the best way to achieve optimal health. Summery:- Oncology/ Medicine/ Palliative unit- primary focus on patients with cancer and patients with alternative measures of care- strengths in dealing with death and dying/ working with families

Working at Toronto Rehab allowed me to further focus my scope onto a more acute unit. The unit required very strict time commitments because clients needed to be transport ready for dialysis treatment early in the morning. Because of the nature of many renal disease processes, I was fortunate enough to also consistently do wound care for stage 4+ and unstageable wounds. I am very confident and skillful in assessment and care for wounds. I was also able to become efficient in G-feeds and colostomy care. Many of the clients were admitted for CVA’s and MVA’s which allowed me to practice and become proficient at taking care of clients with severely impaired physical function. What I take away from this clinical experience is how quickly I learned to work under pressure, while still being competent and safe. Summery:- dialysis unit- focus on end stage renal patients with dialysis teatment- rehab patients MVA and CVA

Working in the veteran’s ward was one of my first clinical experiences. I learned and employed various forms of therapeutic communication as needed. The unit required and demanded fast adaptation to clients with declining cognitive function. The unit allowed brushing up of hygiene care, communication, and more thorough assessments. Working on the unit allowed me to also revise and revisit practice standards for restraints (chemical, physical) and become very familiar with drugs often used with mental health care. Summery:- Veterans ward- mental health unit with focus on patients with Dementia, Alzheimer, Parkinson's disease- Specialized and excelled in working with and adapting to patients with declining cognitive function
