2016 presents new opportunities and with a healthy workload an exciting future. Rather than taking on another partner I have decided to develop closer relations with another practice, whose senior partner I have worked with for a number of years. We are hoping that due to our different clients ...

I was given the opportunity get closer to the sharp end of architecture and to practice again as an architect, as design had become a small part of my management role at Samuel Smiths, This led me to set up PEB Architects, with a healthy workload from the outset. • Chief Architect
      • 1994 - 2005

I was promoted in 1994 on the retirement of the previous Chief Architect. I managed the department responsible for the overall control of large and small pub refurbishments, restoration of estate buildings and design work for the Tadcaster Regeneration Scheme. I was closely involved with the strategic planning of our proposals for Tadcaster and liaised with planning consultants, solicitors and Samuel Smith's Barrister. I was called upon to prepare reports and present our scheme to the Chief Executive and Councillors of Selby District Council and at public meetings in Tadcaster. It was my responsibility to appoint all consultants including architects, engineers, quantity surveyors planning consultants, planning supervisors and interior designers to assist on major projects, working closely with them all. Many projects were carried out during my employment at Samuel Smith but a new public house in Cardiff Bay and the rebuilding of Sinclair's Oyster Bar in Manchester following the IRA bomb in 1995, together with an award winning community swimming pool in Tadcaster stand out as being of major significance.

    • Deputy Chief Architect
      • 1988 - 1994

Having undertaken management training I became responsible for the day to day running of the department, then comprising twelve people, ensuring that the programmed work was resourced and completed on time. At this time I led the design team and continued working on public houses myself, in addition to a major role on restoration works to parts of the family estate and country houses, many of which are listed buildings. In 1990 I was asked to manage our in-house Direct Works Department comprising sixty staff including bricklayers, joiners, plumbers and painters. I had to liaise closely with various departments within the brewery including the architects and ensure that the tradesmen could work all year round. After a period of 18 months the role of Direct Works Manager was handed over to a new employee and I resumed my role within the Architects Department.

    • Senior Architect
      • 1983 - 1988

Moved to Samuel Smith's in order to work on new building acquisitions in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire, developing the sites into pubs. I was also involved in the annual programme of capital expenditure and public house refurbishment.

    • Architect
      • 1978 - 1983

My first professional employment where I gained valuable experience and also took my RIBA Part III . Varied workload involving Housing Association housing, Private Housing, constructing an Abattoir Racecourse stands, and introduction to working on public houses for Boddington's Brewery PLC.
