By writing plainly and speaking with the City's voice, we let San Franciscans know what they needed to do. Our 5th grade readability made our human translated pages reliable, without the jargon on many government sites.

    As the first cross-government manager of a digital community of practice, I set up and grew the content community through training, events and meetings. Training- manage training for about 300 content designers a month to write for and publish to GOV.UK- cut training costs by 18% per person- kept waiting list at less than half of our agreed targets Events- ran conferences for up to 300 content designers across government- increased number of attendees rating the conference ‘very useful’ by 21% over 3 events- iterated size, format and content each time based on feedbackMeetings- built a community of content designers working on services- set up a steering group of content designers to shape conferences- set up conference sessions and further training to empower and cross train content designers working on GOV.UK, covering coding with the GDS prototype kit, user centred design, user research and user journeys- set up regular meetings of cross-government Heads of Content

    From September 2012 to July 2013 I worked in an agile team of 8 content designers to move 24 government departments from individual websites to GOV.UK in 9 months. In the 2 weeks before launch, I wrote templates for biographies and roles, lead a team creating and editing these entries for all cabinet ministers, and had them approved and published for launch. I worked with the digital teams at Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS), HMRC and the Department of Health, to track, prioritise and move content to GOV.UK based on analysis of their existing web pages and on user needs.After GOV.UK launched, I set up and ran monthly 'Content Clinics' for anyone who published on the site. Running in London, Sheffield and Bristol, the clinics brought content designers together to discuss changes and problems and to find solutions. Through discussion, show and tells and blogging, I supported content designers across government and helped them transition to working on a cross-government website. As a theme lead on GOV.UK, by improving links on the benefits browse page on GOV.UK based on on-page search data, I reduced searches by 29%, meaning 1,800 fewer searches a month on that page.
