    Professional Teaching Fellow in School of Accounting and Finance which sits under the Faculty of Business and Economics. The Department of Accounting and Finance - one of the largest in the University of Auckland with enrolments of approximately 1,500 equivalent full-time students.The department is one of the leading departments in Accounting and Finance in the Asia-Pacific region. It is renowned for its research excellence and innovative teaching.The department is divided into three areas: Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Finance. The department provides courses primarily for the BCom, BCom(Hons), BBIM and MCom programmes. In particular, the BCom(Hons) programme has been highly successful since its inception giving staff an opportunity to teach in their area of specialisation and to supervise research students. It also gives students an opportunity to be creative and critical in their thinking, and to take their learning from their undergraduate studies to the next and more advanced level. Staff from the department also teach in courses in the MBA and Postgraduate Diploma in Business programmes.Students intending to obtain memberships in several prestigious professional bodies can satisfy the academic component of the requirements set by these two bodies at the University of Auckland. The other requirements include the completion of the professional competency and practical experience requirements before they can be fully admitted into the professional bodies. Professional bodies that recognise our programmes include CA ANZ, CPA Australia, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the CFA Institute. Individuals who are members of these professional bodies are increasingly sought after by large accounting and commercial firms, both domestically and globally.     The KPMG New Zealand Accounting Advisory Services focuses on providing services and partnering with clients through complex:- Accounting changes;- Accounting transaction support;- IPO reporting; and- Technical accounting.The KPMG Accounting Advisory Services team in New Zealand also supports the internal KPMG network by assisting audit and advisory teams with engagement related accounting or financial reporting queries. Patricia also works with other KPMG Divisions to provide support to partners so that they are able to provide required information to the Financial Markets Authority. In addition, Patricia is involved with managing risk projects for the audit division such as the KPMG Quality Performance Reviews.

    Managing the audit firm and audit partner registrations with the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) as licensed auditors;Managing the requirements of the firm registration which entails continuous (monthly) disclosure to the FMA of relevant changes to the partnership;Managing the firm reviews that are conducted by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) from the USA and the FMA in New Zealand;Performing in-flight reviews of audit files to allow the audit teams to improve their audit documentation;Managing the firms annual internal Quality Performance Reviews;Bringing together an Audit Quality team that meets every 4-6 weeks;Providing technical guidance to audit teams in relation to the KPMG Audit Methodology;Providing update training to the audit team (graduate to partner) countrywide;Managing the implementation of a Partner Rotation System to track time worked on a client and required cool-off periods, this has involved working with the US office and therefore managing significant time difference has also been essential.

The Director who previously managed this was promoted and I was approached to take over managing training for senior staff (supervisor to partner) in addition to my assurance and audit quality role. I had a direct report who co-ordinated the junior courses for me.Managing training timetable creation;Managing content for monthly audit professional training;Managing content for periodic technical updates that are delivered to supervisors and above;Working with Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch, Tauranga and the Cook Islands to co-ordinate consistent delivering of all levels of training;Interacting with Australian equivalents to determine their approach to certain training;Attending training in Australia so as to gain experience, knowledge and materials to provide to New Zealand;Preparing technical training content;Presenting technical training countrywide;Obtaining Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) training from global and providing this to a limited number of staff and following up with them to ensure that they had completed the training;Performance manager of my direct report;To provide my direct report more opportunities to manage more than the junior courses she took over tasks from me over a period of time allowing me to focus on my technical role.

    I was a Manager in the Calgary Accounting Advisory Services group which is a growing practice at KPMG Calgary. Within the Audit function, this practice focuses on providing services in:- Accounting changes;- Accounting transaction support;- Process improvement;- IPO reporting; and- Technical accounting.I worked on:- Financial Statement preparation for subsidiaries of large SEC listed entities and unlisted junior oil and gas entities;- Audit liason between the organization staff and their auditors - this assists in streamlining the audit process as I can use my audit knowledge to explain audit procedures to the client and/or suggest quicker audit methods to the auditors;- Accounting process documentation in a process improvement project - focusing on correct accounting entries and ensuring audit risk points are addressed by the processes;- US GAAP to IFRS conversion white papers and vice versa; and - Presentation of technical accounting topics/updates to finance departments at clients - this can be either US GAAP or IFRS.Work in Calgary allowed me to use my mining knowledge and apply it to the oil and gas environment with specific focus on Canadian Oil Sands.

    I qualified as a Chartered Accountant South Africa (CA(SA)) after completing my SAICA training contract in 2011 and passing my board exams first time in 2010 and 2009 respectively.At KPMG I completed the last two years of my SAICA training contract where I obtained audit experience in the energy and natural resources division. I had the benefit of auditing both mining and oil and gas clients. In addition to the above clients I also performed the audit of a manufacturing client which gave me an alternative and beneficial experience. Further, I was accredited as a KPMG Trainer/Facilitator and was therefore able to present audit and professional skills courses to staff of KPMG.
