    Maintained and regularly updated the Hospital Morbidity Data Collection (26.4 million records) using SAS and Excel, using SAS to manipulate and subset data, create formats and macros, procedure steps, tables and custom datasets. Used Excel to further manipulate and check data. Regularly wrote customised syntax for ad hoc data requests for parliamentary questions, media queries, staff from various branches of the Department of Health, hospitals, other government and non-government agencies, and researchers. Provided a ‘fresh set of eyes’ to modernise a number of outdated standard procedures. ACHIEVEMENTS: Developed novel SAS syntax for the IDC team, including: a reverse-lag function for use when sub-setting HMDC data; an ODS function to control the number of tables produced by SAS per Excel tab; alleviated workload of the IDC manager by taking responsibility for the review of scholarly manuscripts produced using HMDC data supplied to researchers via the Data Linkage Branch; and modernised the IDC Schedule of Regular Requests spreadsheet by introducing the ‘share workbook’ function, allowing multiple team members simultaneous access, and added hyperlinks to standard operation procedures for each regular request.

    Responsible for assessing Data Linkage and HREC applications to ensure they were feasible and met policy and legislative requirements. Provided written and oral feedback and advice to applicants regarding their applications, in preparation for formal seeking approval. Liaised with data custodians to negotiate on applicants’ behalf to access various databases. Performed final checking quality assurance role by undertaking independent, final assessment of linked data to ensure it met the brief of requestors and conformed to legislative and policy restrictions. Extracted and manipulated linked data using UNIX, SQL, R, and SAS programming languages. Presented to researchers at Data Linkage Researcher Training seminars at UWA and Curtin universities. ACHIEVEMENTS: Undertook major revision of the DLB Data Application Form to streamline the data application and ethics process for researchers that had an immediate impact on the quality of applications. Improved the graphics, animation and layout of the PowerPoint presentations for Data Linkage Researcher Training seminars. Provided advice and assistance to the DLB Manager, based upon my policy advocacy experience, in the development of a successful business case to increase the number of staff at the DLB by 3.0 FTE.

Conducted qualitative and quantitative research for the development and evaluation of mass media campaigns, including Make Smoking History, Go for 2 Fruit and 5 Veg, Find 30 Minutes A Day, Don’t Ignore Diabetes, SunSmart, and Act Belong Commit.ACHIEVEMENTS: Investigator on 11 research grants to the value of $2,349,383; won 5-year Healthway Tobacco Control Research Fellowship (2006–2010); policy research directly quoted in Australian Senate Hansard, Western Australian Legislative Assembly inquiry documents, UK Department of Health Impact Assessments; led research team with no budget and student volunteers to systematically refute specific claims of $5 million tobacco industry media campaign against plain packaging.
