I was the first English language teacher to be employed by the Greek Cypriots since "the troubles". My duties were to teach secondary school students in the afternoons and adult classes in the evenings. I also acted as the English language proof reader for a new magazine issued by the Greek Communal Chamber "Cyprus Today". The project to begin writing a new English language guide to Cyprus was abandoned because of the war with the Turks, when the first UN troops arrived and established the green line between the two communities. My contract was not renewed and one year later the project of employing native-English language teachers was discontinued.I began my first serious studies of modern Greek and travelled extensively the island.
