    President - Baltimore City Council----------Vice Chair of Labor Committee, Vice Chair of Housing and Community Development, Member of Land Use and Transportation, Education, Public Safety, and Executive Appointments CommitteeFour months into my first term, I introduced a Liquor Ordinance that aimed to prohibit youth under the age of 18 from making purchases from liquor establishments. The Liquor Ordinance received unanimous support from the Council and was signed into law in June of 2012. Under my tenure, West Baltimore has been awarded numerous grants and awards, such as, 375k/annual Safe Streets Program grant. The program is designed to be a community mobilization and outreach program that combats shootings and homicides. In addition, I have been the lead advocate on bringing City Year, an organization created to improve student attendance, behavior and course achievement in math and English, to Baltimore. Other notable accomplishments during my current term: - Passed “Just Cause” legislation to protect renters during the pandemic from evictions- Passed Baltimore’s strongest local hiring law requiring city contractors to disclose and maintain local hiring goals - Passed legislation to establish the first-ever Suicide Prevention Coordinator in Baltimore City and established a city-wide Suicide Prevention workgroup (Chaired by Councilwoman Danielle McCray) - Passed legislation to grant Baltimore City residents $2,000 in security deposit relief and extended grace periods for rental late fees- Created a city fund to be used for apprenticeship opportunities and related fees for Baltimore City youth. I journalize my districts history and happenings via SEVENth District Magazine, a quarterly publication for and about the residents, merchants, patrons and citizens of Baltimore City's 7th District.
