    The objective of this assignment is to assist selected tea factories in Kenya (in partnership with KTDA) identify energy saving and energy efficiency measures resulting in demonstrable economic and environmental benefits. In addition, conducting thermal energy audits that will provide useful information for successful integration of the Concentrated Solar Power (Parabolic Trough Collectors) technology.This project focuses on the use of solar Parabolic Trough Collectors (PTCs) in sustainable manner for industrial heating e.g. tea drying in tea factories. The main objective is to reduce the use of biomass, particularly eucalyptus, in tea production hence reduce on virtual water and GHG emissions within the Tea Industry in Kenya.

COLEACP is a network and a technical assistance tool for the sustainable and inclusive development of the private sector (small and medium enterprises (SMEs)) based on expertise and an active training system in 50 countries.My specific activities include assisting smallholders, farmer groups and organizations, and MSMEs with expertise that cover environmental aspects, such as energy use, training on renewable energy technologies e.g. Solar & Biogas and energy efficiency in a sustainable framework. It also entail support in compliance processes in order to access international and domestic horticultural markets.     Energy expert, “Empowering Rural Communities and Households in Kenya with Renewable Energy,” (ERCHRE) project in Kenya. Nicholas spearheaded technical studies to provide guidance to the Rainforest Alliance and potential investor(s), on establishment of a Centralized Production Facility (CPF) for both carbonized & non carbonized briquettes under the ERCHRE Project, focusing on business viability and partnership feasibility. A comprehensive study was undertaken at 2 briquette manufacturing facilities in Kiambu and Kisumu counties.Key activities: a)Worked with the investor to assess the current business status of the existing briquette production facility to determine their potential partnership with the ERCHRE Project as CPF; legal status, investment, etc. b) Worked with the investor to determine suitable modalities for combining commercial briquette production together with supply of carbonized biomass to HECs supported by the project for purposes of producing household biomass briquettes. c) Assessed collection and preparation of biomass for commercial briquette production and for carbonizing, machineries required for efficient production in order to meet the increased demand for biomass for driers, carbonizing kilns, etc. d) Proposed various business models for the CPF. e) Supported in undertaking business financial analysis for the CPF to determine its profitability and to justify if any support from the project is required.
