I served as Congressman Carson’s lead policy advisor and second highest ranking staffer, supervising fourteen staff members in Washington, D.C. and Indianapolis. I managed all legislative activities in both offices, including development of strategic priorities and initiatives, briefing and advising the Congressman, and communication with constituents. Together with my legislative team, I prepared over 700 annual vote recommendations for the Congressman and crafted original legislation to address local and national challenges.My individual legislative portfolio covered national security and foreign affairs, including the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. I worked closely with the defense industry and military services to pursue policy and funding priorities, securing over $100 million in annual contracts and grants.

As the Congressman’s lead policy advisor, I led a five person team to make recommendations about legislative activities in the Congress and develop original legislation. As his national security staffer, I developed and executed a plan to successfully secure the Congressman’s appointment as a Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats) and the House Armed Services. Working closely with other congressional offices, committee staff, and military personnel, I authored four bills that were eventually signed into law dealing with military mental health care and financial security.

With this position, I became part of the Congressman’s senior staff, giving me new opportunities to communicate with and influence his work in Congress. I managed the Congressman’s work on national security, transportation, energy, environment, and agriculture issues and started developing concepts and coalitions to that became four bills signed into law dealing with military mental health and financial security.

As the first District Scheduler hired by newly elected Congressman Donnelly, my position entailed creating and executing goals that would ensure that he was visible and active in all parts of his congressional district. In addition to managing his district schedule, I staffed the Congress at a wide array of events across his district, from farm town halls to plant tours to senior home conversations. The diversity of events and pace set during my time in this position was continued by my successors, including Congressman Donnelly’s successful reelection and United States Senate campaigns.
