    Worked with various hospitals throughout Ontario consulting with their Health Information department on the importance of data integrity. I completed inpatient data quality audits to identify the quality of the coding and abstracting, a more thorough review of the record for opportunities to assign a more accurate case mix and showing the effect it has on data reporting to the Ministry of Health for funding and research purposes. Also provided educating/training on CIHI coding and abstracting guidelines as it impacts on case mix assignment.

    I was responsible for the clinical data processing from the health records department. My main role was to assure that the coding staff were up to date on CIHI guidelines & standards, Ministry of Health requirements, and training staff about case mix methodologies and data quality principles. Perform data quality audits for staff education purpose. I also set up the concurrent review process, where a Health Information Analyst was part of the multidisciplinary patient team to ensure appropriate case mix assignment. Worked with Informatics to provide quality data used for internal and external reporting. I also consulted on the processes to move to an electronic patient record, switching from the WHO ICD-9 coding classification to ICD-10, and systems that would simplify workload.

    In my role of Senior Analyst I was responsible for answering coding and abstracting queries from hospitals across Canada. I assisted in creating education materials and did workshops in the areas of standards, data quality and case mix methodology to those in the health information sector. Sending updates on code usage, new coding and abstracting guidelines, and Ministry of Health requirements. I also participated in discussions related to system updates and/or changes to accommodate new codes or data information to be collected, and the ongoing development of case mix methodologies.

    I started out as a Health Information Analyst, coding and abstracting inpatient records at Toronto General. Then moved in to the position of Utilization Review Coordinator, analyzing and reporting of utilization practices, and doing coding quality audits for Toronto General. And then became the Quality Improvement Coordinator for The Toronto Hospital (General & Western division). I was charged to standardize policies and procedures between the two health information departments, and created and facilitated action groups within the major function areas to implement CQI/TQM principles.
