My current role is a Group Credit Risk Manager at Investec in Johannesburg, South Africa. I sit as a voting member in a delegated mandate Group Credit Committee. The committee is tasked with evaluating and approving deals across the bank (both from the retail bank as well as corporate and investment bank business unit). Group Credit is the final credit risk function with a mandate to approve deals, anything beyond their mandate requires executive and non-executive oversight with recommendation from Group Credit. As a result, we liase and engage constantly with the executive and non-executive members. Apart from my committee responsibilities, I’m also responsible for maintaining Investec Bank Group’s lending policies as per the Banks’ Regulation provisions and best practice. Thus, on an annual basis I review such policies against any updates in regulations and or practices and trends in the banking space and take them through for approval.I also sit in various monitoring forums, i.e. watchlist, deal forum, review forums etc. the various forums are aimed at keeping abreast of the bank’s book and taking note of early warning signs with financially distressed counterparties. We also provide strategic guidance to deal team on various risk issues prior and or post credit. We are also instrumental in providing risk insight to the model development team who are currently engaged in taking the bank to the AIRB regime (Advanced Internal Rating Based).
