I worked with a team of three other vacation work students (two of us from UCT, two from Stellenbosch university). We were given various assignments over a two week period. On most days, we were given the opportunity to have a four-on-one session with one of the senior staff (All qualified actuaries) from the various department at Sanlam. Assignment 1: Based on embedded values (EVs) and value of new business (VNBs). We had to first read and understand advisory practice note 107 (APN107), which is issued by the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) then apply what we'd learnt. The assignment took us 3 days to complete.Assignment 2: We were required to work together to build and Excel-based reserving model for a 10-year term assurance policy. This assignment took us 2 days to complete.Assignment 3: We were required to use Visual Basics for Applications (VBA) to write code that could perform a particular task. This assignment took us 2 days.Assignment 4: We had to prepare a short presentation on investment vehicles and asset classes that individual investors may invest in. We also looked at the influence of social media on the insurance industry. We had two days to prepare the presentation, after which we presented the presentation to a panel that consisted of the Actuarial professional staff from Sanlam. The experience was very rewarding and educational. We got to learn a lot, and to meet some very smart and talented people.

      • Cape Town Area, South Africa

I did vacation work at the Actuarial and Insurance solutions (AIS) unit at Deloitte at the Cape Town office. I did a lot of work on excel (mostly data checks). I was also introduced to Prophet and DCS, which are programs that are widely used by insurers. I was asked (by one of the managers) to conduct a mini-research on microinsurance. I got to meet and get to know the Cape Town AIS team, which consists of about 16 highly talented and intelligent Actuarial professionals. I left with a pretty good idea of how an Actuarial consultancy works and how valuable the work that they do is.
