    Michele Sandilands is an Architect whose professional background spans a period of 29 years. Having graduated from the University of Cape Town with distinction she has worked locally and abroad specialising in areas of Education, Conservation, Sustainability and Community. Having a passion for projects where a careful and sensitive approach to appropriate design is called for, Michele has worked amongst others on Kirstenbosch Glasshouse (MLH in association with Julian Elliott Architect) and of note the environmentally challenging and historically sensitive upgrade, conversion and restoration of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and new restaurant on the Upper Table. Michele has a special interest in assisting marginalised communities. Completed for the Provincial Government of the Western Cape within severe budget and time constraints, the Kalkfontein Primary School in Kuils River School a school for 1 500 learners set within a RDP housed community has received both the prestigious CIA Award for Architecture 2007 and the CMA Regional and National Award 2006.Aside from serving on the Advisory Board of Rape Crisis she regularly provides the services of her practice on a pro bono basis.Michele has a keen interest in the design of sustainable buildings. The principles of sustainable design are entrenched throughout her work from the simple off-grid houses; House Langham at Cape Infanta (awarded a CIA Award for Architecture & SAIA Award of Merit 2008); House Mason at Churchaven (awarded a CIAAward for Architecture 2009) to the extension to the Unisa Campus at Bellville recently awarded a CIA award for Architecture 2013, The South African Institute of Architects Award of Merit and the Award for Excellence. Michele is thrilled to be one of the finalists for the prestigious Afrisam- SAIA award for Sustainability.
