’Bealach’ was an independent project that involved multiple stakeholders including GSA, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, An Lanntair and the Uig Community. The project aim was to look at how art could play a role in developing the route from Stornoway to the planned 2020 UNESCO St Kilda World Heritage Site at Uig. Where this project had a cultural focus there were the partnership objectives to take into consideration as this route was to increase tourism to the planned UNESCO site at Uig. A UNESCO report had stated that the development of the route from the ferry terminal to Uig would have an impact as to the success of the planned site, a site which would increase tourism and provide employment. My role was to use Design Innovation Research Strategies and participatory engagement methods in order generate insights that would inspire a piece of art. This involved travelling across the Isle of Lewis working collaboratively with the artist, communities and tourists whilst keeping the project stakeholders up to date with our progress. Based upon my engagement and insights, the artist Thomas Keyes created an illuminated manuscript using bold colours and imagery, drawing inspiration from the colours of the local landscape and the history of Uig.
