As an Apprentice, under the watchful eye of a rotating list of highly trained Journeymen, I machined and finished Die pieces, including choosing mat'l, milling it, heat treating, and grinding. I modified punch blanks, inspected recently ran Dies for wear and repair-installing new sections or replacing broken punches as needed, safety trained for lockout procedure on in-press die work, sharpened my own drills, and played well with others when it was "tease the apprentice time". I ran the following machines: Surface Grinders-small hand wheel and large automatic, Bridgeport Mill, LeBlond manual Lathe. I used surface plates and height gages for scribe work, Calipers, Micrometers and Indicators as well as many hand tools and reference gages. I made many of my tools while an apprentice that I still use today in my newer job. I also went to college part-time at night. I was laid off with the other 6 apprentices 16 mos into my Apprenticeship-no Journeymans card.

    • Hilo Driver

At Burwood Products, I wore just about every hat there, with the exception of shipping or receiving. I was a line worker in Paint, Assembly and Packing Departments. I was a Group Line Leader in the Paints and Packing Departments. I worked in the warehouse as a HiLo Driver with responsibiliites such as maintaining inventory, knowing our most common part numbers by heart, being able to look at a parts list for the next upcoming job and knowing off the top of my head if we were short any parts even if the computer said otherwise, getting pulled jobs out to the floor in a timely manner, and putting returns parts put back into inventory as needed. I was also fortunate enough to get to run the Dispatchers job as needed. I drove a stand up electric HiLo. I did inventory on a regular basis with a box HiLo up in the racks. I was trained on safety harnesses and other safe practices while doing my many jobs.
