My teaching is primarily online (by design and with great intention) and focuses on scaffolding the transition between university study and work. I coordinate and design resources to support QUT’s School of Built Environment students (Urban and Regional Planning, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering) during their engagement with Professional Practice (work integrated learning) and Honours Projects (final year studies undertaken across two semesters). I also design and deliver the final year Urban Planning Practice studio undertaken by Urban and Regional Planning students - the unit provides an opportunity for students to consolidate their learning from the first three years of our Urban and Regional Planning course, and leverage technologies (and associated skills) to craft responses to challenging strategic planning problems. All of my teaching relies on intentional consultation with industry, and cooperation with stakeholders across the university. (I love teaching, if you haven’t discerned that already :)My research addresses the interactions between technical experts (planner, scientists, engineers...) and politicians in the resolution of technically complex problems, particularly those related to infrastructure and more, narrowly, in times of perceived or actual crisis. I am very interested in the roles of technical literacy, communication, and path dependency (roughly the idea that history matters) in determining outcomes for such problems. My current research translates findings from my dissertation into current policy dilemmas, including the timing and extent of land use revisions in response to climate change related hazards (sea level rise and increased cyclonic activity), as well as responses within built environment fields of practice and policy to cycles (drought and deluge) and crises (famine and flood) in water availability.
