I performed research on the Salisbury Zoo’s Ateles Fusciceps (Spider Monkeys). Working in a team consisting of three other students we created an enrichment plan for the spider monkeys to elicit more natural behaviors through the design and placement of puzzle-feeders. In my part of the project I recorded, through observation, the spider monkey’s behavior and the zoo visitor’s behavior utilizing an ethogram that I created. I then coded this data and analyzed the behaviors of the spider monkeys pre and post-enrichment. I found a significant increase in naturalistic behaviors of the spider monkeys once the puzzle feeders were placed in different quadrants. There was also a significant increase in the amount of time zoo visitors spent in front of the spider monkey habitat.
