Kinneir Dufort, or KD, are an innovation and design consultancy operating across the industrial, consumer and medical sectors. As a member of mechanical engineering, I worked closely with our other expertise teams – design, research, electronics and human factors – to deliver integrated and effective solutions to our clients’ needs on often tight timescales. Projects I worked on have varied in breadth, depth and complexity considerably. Scope was as limited as troubleshooting a singular failure mode, or as broad as a full end-to-end product development, starting with an idea and ending with handover to manufactures, as with the Monk Smart Ice Bath.My role included systems design and development, mechanism design, test rig development, detailed 3D design, 2D drawing drafting, prototype iteration, analysis (FEA and physical), design for manufacture, supplier management, hazard analysis and risk management. We work to ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 quality and documentation standards. I both generated complex assemblies from scratch and integrated with client’s existing data.I proudly stood behind the company’s motto of “Designing a Better World”. Within KD I was part of the Sustainability Lab – pushing to minimise or eliminate the climate impact of our clients’ products and services.Curiosity, flexibility, and learning have been key to succeeding in this role, and my skills have advanced greatly over my time here.

Assisted with innovative research involving biomimicry, computer vision, swarms, self-repair and human-machine interfacing. I was excited by working with researchers on the cutting edge of physical robotics and artificial intelligence. Spending a day with each research group I learnt as much as possible in a short week.
