In spring 2020, I led a project with the University of Kansas Center for Online and Distance Learning (CODL) to audit 7 online courses for the Department of Geography and Atmospheric Science to determine if they meet university and CODL guidelines. In 2019, I lectured 1 section/semester of freshman-level world regional geography (~60 students) for the Spring, Summer , and Fall semesters. In Fall 2018, I led 3 discussion sections (~20 students each) of freshman-level world regional geography that were attached to the larger lecture section. I achieved an overall performance rating (student evaluations) in my lecture of 4.65 out of 5; 0.28 points higher than the department average over the same time.

With the support of a Fulbright Grant, I lived in Nicaragua for eight months where I worked with indigenous collaborators to study the development and subsequent failure of Chinese promoted jellyfish fisheries. Using an framework of governance, globalization, physical geography, and ecology, I conclude that the ‘boom-and-bust’ of the fishery was related to unpredictable jellyfish blooms, development-focused natural resource policies in Nicaragua, and economic development and over exploitation of fisheries in China—some of these findings have been published in journals in the U.S. and Costa Rica, including the Journal of Latin American Geography and Revista Geográfica. I was also invited back in June 2017 by Fulbright to participate in their new student scholar orientation in Austin Texas.

      • Jan 2014 - May 2017
      • Lawrence, Kansas Area

From 2014-2017, I worked as a Graduate Research Assistant for Dr. Peter Herlihy on a large project that brought together academic, governmental, NGO, and indigenous collaborators from the U.S. and Central America to study the impact of land rights on the stability of indigenous societies. I worked in our offices at KU and in our collaborating university in Honduras. The team conducted a series of participatory research mapping (PRM) workshops with local investigators from eight newly-titled indigenous territories. I worked together with indigenous investigators that we trained to create, review, revise, and transform the PRM field data into a large-scale GIS database with digital maps of the territories and natural resources use patterns. This work required mastering under-standings of little-known cultures, tropical ecosystems, as well as the construction of geopolitical and environmental analyses of cadastral maps and census data for the entire region.
