    In a variety of roles, including working in the Private Office of Alan Clarke MP, the Minister of State for Defence Procurement - in whose diaries I am proud to be mentioned, albeit as a nincompoop - it’s a long story involving a government car, his dogs and my advice on the proper use of public funds. I began as a filing clerk, was the first non graduate in many years to pass the Fast Stream exams, with a 2% pass rate, helped Poland, Hungary and the Czech and Slovak republics join NATO, settled legal claims by service personnel against the MOD and ran the UK’s X-Files department.
