Developed, planned, and implementing a LEGO Robotics for 6th through 8th grade middle school aged students beginning in the fall of 2013.This curriculum is unique in that it runs for a semester long period, is sequential in scope, and culminates in a First LEGO League robotics challenge.This curriculum includes the following STEM concepts:Science:-The use of and differences between the Scientific Method versus the Engineering Process-How to form a working hypothesis as a basis of problem solving-How to change and test a single variable during problem solvingTechnology:-Use of LEGO NXT software and that Integrated Development Environment-Use of the NXT Programming examples to test sensor and movement variables-Use of the NXT Video Trainer-Use of the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Robotics Engineering Volumes I and II-Use of programming logic structures such as loop and switch blocks-Forming a basic understanding of variables-Learning to break tasks into testable segments before adding them to a finalized robotics programEngineering:-The Engineering Process-Iterative Design-Structurally sound building concepts-Keeping an Engineering Journal for documentation of learning-Forming a disciplined approach to design and iterative testingMath:-Radius, Diameter, Circumference -Metric Versus English Measurement-Calculating distance traveled by the student's robot-Calculating distance versus time-Calculating degrees of rotation-Calculating accurate turning behaviors-Understanding Greater Than and Less Than as they pertain to threshold valuesBuilt and designed a number of challenges for my students from MDF and other materials to enhance the learning experience.During this course all students were required to keep and Engineering Journal to document their work.This program is also devleoping an Intermediate and Advanced strand that will be implemented during the 2014 and 2015 school year's
