    The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society is the charitable organisation that supports the infrastructure that underpins and develops this cultural landmark. The Head of Operations is one of three Senior Managers, reporting the Chief Executive and Board of Trustees, with responsibility for the development and delivery of the Business Plan and the strategic development of the organisation, in line with the core mission statement of the organisation. The Head of Operations’ remit includes responsibility for Business Planning, Financial Management, Box Office, Human Resource, Governance, Premises, Legal, IT, Administration, Incident Planning, Health and Safety and Organisational Development. With a turnover of £4M per annum and a core team of 23 people, the team I lead have responsibility to ensure the organisation is supported in it’s day to day operations, as well as ensuring systems, processes and procedures are fit for purpose and future proof. During my first two years in the organisation I led the Operations team through a significant restructure process to identify and deliver efficiency gains and a more coherent and collaborative approach to delivering support services to the organisation and its constituent partners. Alongside this is I have reconfigured the third party support services to ensure they align to the needs and demands of the business and continue to deliver value for money.

    My role as General Manager was to ensure the successful day-to-day operation of the professional and artistic profile of the only site-specific theatre company in Northern Ireland. This included supporting the Artistic Director in the development and delivery of the artistic programme and implementation of the company business and strategic plan; research and application to appropriate funding bodies, developing sponsorship, ‘earned income’ and other streams of revenue, artistic development and overseeing production budgets and staff, including production trainees, interns and work placements. During my time at Kabosh I secured funding from a range of trusts, foundations and national funding bodies, including the core, multi-annual revenue funding from Arts Council NI (ACNI) and Belfast City Council (BCC) for three years. I successfully implemented a three-legged approach to fundraising; 1/3 of income from public investment; 1/3 is raised through donations and fundraising; and 1/3 is earned through service provision, bespoke commission and event management. I was the lead on the company’s move into digital and immersive technologies, including the production of three mobile phone applications that support and diversify the audiences for site-specific production and offer new ways to experience the live work in a digital medium. These apps afford Kabosh’s audiences an enhanced experience and leave a tangible legacy to community engagement projects.

    My role at Shooting Fish was to ensure the effective running and management of the company and the projects undertaken, including all professional production work. I researched and applied for sources of funding, managed the budgets and staff for projects and ensured the company remained in line with the requirements of funding bodies and wider public legislation and the strategic objectives set out by the board. As a producer I ensured projects had the necessary resources and participants to deliver their objective.I ensured the external profile of the company was well maintained, and that the company reported effectively to the board of directors. I researched and developed new project, working with the Artistic Directors to increase the professional profile and the growth of the company.

    At Manchester Business School my role involved management of a research centre and managing research output. This included from tender, through to ethical approval, conferences, seminars, publication and management of financial data for individual research projects and the costing of these in application for funding in compliance with University procedures. I managed the research finance accounts for the whole centre, with up to 30 research projects and £4m in turnover.
