I am currently an Accredited Auditor for the California Sustainable Winegrowing Program through which I consult with vineyard and winery owners and wineries working to become certified sustainable under the CCSW program. I review self-assessments and all aspects of operations including erosion control plans, resource use and chemical handling for sustainability and conduct site visits and assist vineyards and winery managers in continuous improvement of practices.I have over 12 years of experience in watershed planning, stream restoration and monitoring, project planning, erosion control and sediment reduction. My vineyard consulting experience includes site analyses, evaluation of land management and erosion control practices, erosion control plan review, drainage and irrigation system review and compilation of farm plans with recommended actions. I hold a Master’s of Landscape Architecture Degree from UC Berkeley’s Environmental Planning program. In addition to studying planning processes, I studied fluvial geomorphology and riparian habitat restoration. I hold a CPESC certification and have considerable knowledge of erosion control BMPs, project permitting procedures, construction methods, project and contract management, decision-making processes and public speaking. I have partnered with state and local agencies, watershed groups, farmers, landowners and other contractors working toward sustainable land use.

    • Project Manager, Senior Geomorphologist
      • 2012 - 2014
      • Napa, Ca

As Project Manager and Senior Geomorphologist at California Land Stewardship Institute (CLSI) I led the Napa Green/Fish Friendly Farming program in Napa County. Over my 2 years in that position, I worked with over 30 vineyard managers in Napa, Mendocino and Sonoma Counties, taking them through the farm planning process. I reviewed their Erosion Control Plans, vineyard layouts, farming practices, drainage systems and irrigation systems and sources. I conducted site visits with the manager to view existing conditions at each vineyard and field-verify their management practices and erosion control measures. For those properties that were developed before the County ordinance, I helped them identify runoff issues and develop erosion control strategies. As part of the planning process, I created maps of site development for each plan. I worked closely with members of the Napa County Agricultural Commissioner’s office and National Marine Fisheries Service to assure that each vineyard site met the conditions set forth by those offices such as location and storage of pesticides, storm water management and groundwater protection.Additional projects included reviewing scientific literature and writing a report analyzing the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BMPs) at reducing environmental impacts related to vineyard development, particularly on hillsides. I also planned, designed and coordinated erosion control and habitat enhancement projects including data collection and analysis, permitting, landowner agreements, grant writing, scheduling and budgeting. Projects included road improvements, fish passage improvement and stream bank stabilization. I also led data collection efforts for stream flow and groundwater monitoring. As senior staff member, I assisted with hiring new staff, and trained and mentored 3 staff members.

Worked with geomorphDESIGN to install stream bank stabilization measures and riparian plantings in Ross, CA. I managed the construction team installing stream bank stabilization and habitat enhancement structures comprised of boulders, root wads, redwood lag walls, and live willow brush layering. I also designed and managed installation of a live willow brush mattress and woven willow wall to protect stream banks and improve habitat. I am currently working on three erosion control and riparian revegetation projects in conjunction with geomorphDESIGN.

    • Local Watershed Guidance
      • 2003 - 2010

As a member of the LaPlatte Watershed Partnership I worked with many other professionals as collaborators on data collection and corridor planning projects and managed budgets, timelines and reporting for such. I provided information and guidance to local governments, landowners, and community groups regarding geomorphology, instream and riparian habitats and land-use issues. Appointed to Hinesburg Development Review Board for advising landowners and the town on river, floodplain, and wetland issues involved in proposed development projects.  Served in an on-call facility for town selectboards, planning commissions, conservation commissions, and watershed groups for advising on geomorphic issues and advocating for river corridor protection and stormwater runoff prevention.  Prepared grant applications, project budgets, and project progress reports.  Identified areas in the LaPlatte River watershed for protection, restoration or further study.

    • Geomorphologist, Project Manager
      • 2002 - 2010

Work emphasized riparian corridor management planning, fluvial geomorphic assessment and restoration design. I managed all aspects of projects including applying for grants, managing budgets, conducting fieldwork, analyzing data, compiling reports and finalizing grants. I have worked effectively with the agricultural community, environmental groups, local and state governments and citizens. I worked closely with the Vermont State River Management Program to assess the condition of rivers and streams in the state. I identified projects targeted at reducing sediment and nutrient loading of streams and Lake Champlain in order to protect and restore habitats. I also worked with the Champlain Water District with the goal of reducing sediment loading of Shelburne Bay and protect a drinking water source for cities and towns around South Burlington, VT. Projects included riparian corridor conservation and easements, riparian bank revegetation, stream channel meander restoration and road crossing improvement. I researched land use patterns and their effects on natural systems and collected and analyzed geomorphic and habitat assessment data to develop Stream Corridor Plans in 5 watersheds.Using information obtained through my work, I developed presentations and workshops on geomorphic processes, data analysis results, riparian habitats and floodplain and watershed land-use issues. I presented my work at planning commission meetings, conservation commission meetings and local stakeholder meetings to achieve consensus for moving forward with projects. I hired, trained and scheduled field assistants and also recruited, trained and supervised volunteers and interns.I had the opportunity to collaborate on implementation of several riparian corridor conservation projects notably working with the LaPlatte Watershed Partnership to implement a multifaceted project resulting in stream corridor conservation, wetland restoration, and farmland conservation on over 500 acres.
