  • Bedales School
    • Petersfield, Hampshire, UK
    • Committee Chair
      • Mar 2013 - Aug 2016
      • Petersfield, Hampshire, UK

I served as a member of the Bedales Parents' Association (BPA). The BPA is responsible for parent welfare at the school. I was initially a representative for my child's year group. I chaired the Friends of Bedales sub-group of the BPA in 2014/2015, and was deputy chair of the BPA. In 2015 I co-chaired the BPA for a few months and then chaired it for the remaider of my tenure. Our objective was to consider matters of whole school interest, to be an initial conduit between parental concerns and the school, to be a sounding board for proposed amendments to school policies, and to assisst with content and wording of new policies. The BPA raised matters of concern regarding pupil welfare to the school eg. lack of sleep in dormitories.I ran the BPA awards system for 3 years. The object of this initiative is to promote the welfare of pupils in a broader sense, not just scholastic welfare. Pupils and staff submit bids, which are assessed for suitability. Awards included a skate board park, professional drum kit for the music department for concerts, and purchase of a drone (also used to map the school, for maintenance and hired out to local businesses), funds to improve a junior school playground, funds for pond clearing, a DJ sound system for school dances and functions, funds for the Outdoor Work department for, inter alia, bee supplies and to rebuild a historic oven.

    • Board Member
      • May 2003 - Dec 2007
      • Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

I was appointed to the full board of the BIS-R. The school was damaged in a terrorist bomb attack in May 2003 and subsequently lost half the pupils in a matter of weeks. A strategic rescue plan was devised and implemented. I was a member of the commmittee responsible for this, which included decisions on how to move forward financially, assessing the extent of damage, overseeing repairs to the school, and the introduction of new physical safeguards including a security system. I was a member of the school's finance committee, responsible for the oversight of the school's business and financial dealings. The situation in Saudi Arabia made it difficult to attract suitable staff, including Head Teachers and Bursars/Business Managers. A succession of Bursars and Business Managers appointed by the Head Teachers lacked sufficient financial and business experience and I became involved in the daily running of the business aspects of the school, as well as being involved in its strategic direction. Latterly, I was involved in the senior and financial staff selection process from initiation to appointment. When I was appointed to the Board control and division of duties was lacking in financial processes and I designed and implemented appropriate control systems. Initially I was involved in preparing the annual budget and latterly I was involved in the review and implementation of the budget. I also rewrote the school Constitution.
