I work mostly with low income Medicare beneficiaries, people who are "dual eligible" who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid and those who are eligible for low income subsidies for their part D prescription drugs. This is an under served market that many agents do not work because those people do not have any money for cross selling other insurance products. But it can be rewarding both financially and professionally. I find it easier to self generate leads and clients in this market through community events at local food pantries and other locations where low income people gather. I also build networks with community organizations serving that population as well. I also work to build relationships with mental health organizations since those case managers are often the payees and authorized representatives for their clients. I represent most of the major companies in my area; UnitedHealthCare, Anthem, Aetna, Coventry and Humana. I do most of my business with Medicare Advantage plans and about 2/3 of my business is a special needs plan for dual eligibles. All the MA plans I offer have zero monthly premium options and some offer PPO plans that offer out of network benefits. I also can sell Medicare supplements, but for many in the market I work cannot afford the premiums for a Medicare supplement. For them a zero premium Medicare Advantage plan is the only option other than just original Medicare. I also can offer life insurance including final expense insurance and guaranteed issue life insurance. I also offer long term care insurance and annuities to those who are interested and qualify. The next part of my business plan is to expand out of the low income markets and to work with a local law firm specializing in elder law to offer insurance products to those people who have a need for them.I also write a monthly column in a local newspaper on topics pertaining to the ACA and health insurance in general. I have attached copies of some recent columns.
