CoPE-WELL Community Resilience Index: Developing a Community Resilience Index with an interdisciplinary team from the Disaster Research Center and the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. My role is to participate in the development of a theoretical model of community resilience, develop a set of eight historical and contemporary disaster case studies of community resilience, then in the final year of the project to use national county level data and case studies to validate the model. The purpose of this Index is to be able to predict pre-event how resilient a community will be to a disaster and to identify opportunities for intervention to increase community resilience. Moore, Oklahoma Tornadoes Fieldwork: Conducted quick response reconnaissance field work immediately following the May 2013 tornadoes in Moore, OK to observe how immediate response was organized and with an eye towards emergent community behavior and meeting disaster mental health needs. Follow up fieldwork planned June 9-13, 2014 to conduct interviews with 15 community organizations and agencies about the first year of recovery. Nursing Home Preparedness: Investigated nursing home preparedness through focus groups and semi-structured surveys of Delaware long-term care facilities following Hurricane Irene. Developed a workshop and preparedness planning guide for nursing home administrators. Superstorm Sandy Quick Response Fieldwork: Conducted reconnaissance field work in Staten Island following Hurricane Sandy to assess impact on hospitals. Data from this fieldwork was used to develop an R21 research proposal on disaster impacts on the elderly.
