This actually was the hardest job I have ever done. Taking care of 2 aunties in Ashland, OR, and starting my own caregiving company because the alternatives were awful; selling their houses, enhancing their final days. Taking care of my in-laws in San Diego, CA, by helping them sell their house, choose an assisted-living facility, remodeling their house, selling it, being their daily companion and hiring wonderful caregivers to assist them in my absence. Being the companion for my mother, helping her by moving her into our home, selling her house, donating her possessions to deserving organizations, and making the end of her life extra special for a special lady.

    • Speech Language Pathologist
      • 1993 - 1999
      • Greater Denver Area

Private practice. And lots of volunteer work at Kent Denver School. I was the editor for an amazing handbook for parents that got picked up by the Children's Hospital of Denver. The organization that 7 of us Denver Area parents founded, Circle of Concern, is still ongoing. Go Parents!

You name it, I did it. I was so thankful for Fletcher's teachers at Greenhill School. They provided the perfect elementary education a kid could have.

    • Speech Language Pathologist
      • 1980 - 1984

With a new baby, private practice in Speech and Language Therapy was the way to go. Also, lots of volunteer editing work. I was also appointed by Governor Ruben Askew to the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council and helped organize the Florida House at the International Chamber of Commerce meeting in Orlando. All this with a baby/toddler on my back/in a stroller/or walking beside me. Whew!

I really learned my sales chops here! Lots of retirees who wanted the VERY BEST DEAL for the least amount of money. Hey, who could fault that! It was totally different than speech therapy, but then again, challenge is my middle name (not really, it's Louise).

    • Adjunct Professor
      • 1974 - 1978
      • Miami, Florida

I was assistant co-director of the Debbie School. We had classrooms with a mix of normal and handicapped children, and an intensive home support program. The program was research-based and co-operated with the UM Medical School to provide training for medical students in the areas of parent training and developmental delays. We also had a graduate student training program in severe development disablilities. Wow! It was amazing! and fueled by a Cuban coffee buzz. We had parents who did not speak English or were from 28 different cultures. It was quite a challenge, but I believe the kids truly benefitted from the Debbie School.

    • Speech Pathologist & Language Specialist
      • 1972 - 1974
      • Nashville, TN

Worked with preschoolers in a research setting. It was great. My bosses, Diane & Bill Bricker, were always questioning, always searching for ways to help kids with speech and language handicaps.

    • Graduate Student Intern, Emerson College

While getting my Master's Degree in Speech Pathology from Emerson College (was sick of chemicals), I worked at BCH in the Speech Therapy Outpatient Department with a Kennedy Foundation Scholarship. Fabulous instructors and resources. I wish the rest of the country had these opportunities. (Got locked into the Harvard Medical School Library overnight, had lots to read - pre-cell phone era!)
