My doctoral thesis is on "The Ethics of Political Whistleblowing" in which I explore and critically evaluate the ethical issues involved in the public disclosure of classified government information exposing government wrongdoing. Some key ethical arguments against political whistleblowing involve that it has the potential to harm national security, to breach obligations of loyalty and to involve treason, and finally that it has the potential to undermine democratic processes. What I find is that while there is some validity to these arguments against political whistleblowing, they do not apply to all instances of political whistleblowing and nor do they provide sufficient reason to render the practice morally prohibited in all cases. As such, we have sufficient reason to suggest that political whistleblowing is sometimes prohibited, but also, sometimes permissible. What is unclear, is whether we have a moral obligation to blow the whistle on government wrongdoing? This is also explored.
