    As the General Counsel: Upstream at Anglo American, I lead the upstream legal organization, overseeing legal teams in Australia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and South Africa. We collaborate with Anglo American’s mining businesses to reimagine mining to improve people’s lives. My role includes managing our legal team, ensuring effective integration with business operations, and sharing responsibility with two other General Counsels for overall Group Legal function management. I am also responsible for managing the Johannesburg Company Secretarial Team, including the Anglo American Limited Company Secretary, and overseeing the Anglo American Group Security team.

    As the advisor to the Chair and Board of Anglo American South Africa, the holding company for Anglo American Group's South African operating assets, I reported to the Group General Counsel. My responsibilities included overseeing various strategic projects that involved regulatory review and risk management. I was accountable to both the Group General Counsel and the Group Director for South Africa in executing these projects. Moreover, I supported the Chief Executives of the Group's South African businesses in assessing legal and regulatory risks, as well as advancing regulatory compliance and resilience objectives.

    I led Anglo American's Group Legal function in South Africa for over a decade, managing a team of lawyers providing legal risk management support to all Anglo American's operations in South Africa and neighbouring countries. Specifically, I was responsible for:• Initially integrating a previously decentralised legal function of seven different teams with different practice approaches and reporting lines into a united team over four years.• Personally delivering core strategic legal projects for the Group, including providing mining regulatory risk management advice and employment and strike law support, supporting executive management in responding to national policy developments and managing the legal risk associated with a significant corporate restructuring.• Managing a complex legal function supporting the Anglo American Group in South Africa, including two Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed subsidiaries and three other substantial unlisted subsidiaries, together with interests in other Southern African countries.• Supervising and managing lawyers responsible for delivering large and organisationally integrated legal projects in Southern Africa.• Providing legal and regulatory risk support to South African and global executive leadership and senior management.• Leading and motivating a respected legal team with a common purpose through periods of significant organisational change.• Identifying and developing diverse leadership and talent and coaching lawyers for success.• Developing and implementing independently recognised legal delivery optimisations.

During my tenure at Transcend, I:- Consulted with executive teams of 13 JSE Top 40 companies in various sectors such as mining, industrial, financial services, ICT and telecoms, and construction.- Advised owners and executive management of several notable black-owned businesses.- Supported several notable multinationals operating in South Africa, as well as business chambers for investors from several countries.- Assisted in developing sectoral empowerment and transformation charters.- Consulted with the Department of Trade and Industry of Zambia on their citizen empowerment program

    After joining Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr as a trainee in 1995, I was promoted to director in 2001. While at the firm, I initially specialized in technology and outsourcing agreements until 2004 when I transitioned to the emerging area of black economic empowerment (BEE). In this capacity, I:-Served as legal advisor to the South African Department of Trade and Industry in drafting the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practice (BEE Codes). I was responsible for drafting the BEE Codes gazetted until 2007.- Assisted the Chamber of Mines in negotiating an exemption for the mining industry from the BEE Codes for a limited period after 2007.- Developed proposed amendments to the BEE Codes as appointed by an informal group of 15 significant black-owned businesses.- Advised significant South African companies, government entities, state-owned enterprises, and multinationals on BEE structures and issues.
