I was a Store Man plus a HGV Driver, and Gunner on an Abbott 105 Self Propelled Gun.I was a Section Commander while serving in Northern Ireland.I gained my first stripe (Lance Bombardier) in record time (11 months)I served for 3yrs and bought myself out costing me £300.I have regretted getting out ever since but that said I would have today what I've got if I had stayed in, so things do happen for a reason.I served 25yrs on the reserves, having to report every year to Imphal Barracks in York and being paid nearly £300 per year for only a few hours of attendance.

    • Steel Erector
      • May 1974 - May 1977
      • Halton Leeds

Erecting all new Steel Works for new builds. Dismantling various steel works and tank removals working up and down the country and working at various heights from ground level to a couple of hundred feet up in the air. It was all done the hard way. I would climb the steel by hand and walk along the steel without a safety harness or cherry picker in sight.I can still drive around and see some of my work still up. One place I often see is the pump house at Addingham Dam. I put that steel work up in the middle of winter and it was very steep on one side of the roof, but it was also very cold work and open, but we did it and I love seeing it now witht he stone around it. Those were the days.......................................
