    • 23 SASR Trooper (Volunteer)
      • Jun 1996 - Dec 1996

In 1996 I attempted winter selection through D Squadron of 23 Special Air Service Reserves (23SASR), based in Scotland. I signed up as a naive civvie with no prior military experience, a whole lot of self-belief and an unspoken desperation to get out of a rut at age 23. This was a pre-internet-pre-google-world.I made it as far as the final 6, out of the original 40+, before going to Hereford for test week. However, I made a rookie pacing mistake in near zero visibility, missed my RV cut-off time and just like that my time came to an end with these immortal words from the DS "For you the war is over". Yet, I still had a tremendous sense of achievement.I knew I was in way over my head early on. But, I was Iearning so much about what I was capable of when the odds were heavily stacked against me. I distinctly remember the moment everything we were being taught clicked in to place. I was dropped off the 4 tonner, given my grid reference, asked where I was and told to point at my map. I was given my next RV grid reference, asked where it was on my map and without any feedback assertively told to get away. I tabbed off in to the middle of nowhere in an oddly zen state. The DS recommended I get some experience under my belt in the Para's and return for another attempt in a year or two. I never did. I got the validation I needed at that time in my life. I still get emotional when I think about the difference this experience made in my life.
