    I worked within the Financial and Serious Organised Crime Department in this specialist criminal defence firm, supporting a team of five solicitors. I primarily worked on fraud, money laundering, confiscation and drugs conspiracies, including prosecutions by the SFO and NCA, including those involving Encrochat devices. I also assisted with RSPCA prosecutions, regulatory and extradition matters. My role included: drafting representations to investigating and prosecuting bodies; preparing schedules and other trial analysis documents; holding conferences with clients and counsel; backing hearings at court; and preparing trial bundles.

    I observed several PTPHs and one sentencing hearing and a bail hearing. Whilst shadowing the Judge I assisted with looking over the sentencing guidelines and discussed appropriate sentencing ranges. This allowed me an interesting perspective being able to observe the Judge being persuaded to pass a sentence differing from that we had discussed before.

    I shadowed the judge through a rape trial and was able to discuss with the judge various applications made by the advocates including character. I was able to observe from an impartial viewpoint the varying styles of advocacy used by the two advocates and how they came across to a third party.

    I observed a trial involving two defendants charged with conspiracy to cause GBH. I was able to witness both defendants and several other witnesses giving evidence and was able to the interesting dynamic between the two defence counsel and prosecution counsel when a cut-throat defence was being run.

    I observed a complex case where 6 of 12 defendants charged were tried for racially aggravated ABH against an immigrant. CCTV was instrumental to the case and I saw how the opening statements framed the prosecution case through using that evidence.

    I observed a Newton-hearing which involved a cut-throat defence between two defendants, one of whom was alleging that he acted under duress of his co-defendant. I was able to see the different style of advocacy used to that when a jury is present.

    I was a full time teacher at a bilingual school in provincial Thailand. I taught both primary and secondary classes in English, English Grammar and Social Studies. This role required adaptability: halfway through term I was required to step in last minute and teach an iGCSE business qualification, which meant assimilating an entirely new syllabus within two days. This involved thinking on my feet to respond to questions in what was an unfamiliar area, whilst engaging an audience.

    Over the summer I lead a team of young people, aged 15-17, through the National Citizen Service (NCS) structured programme. The programme consists of three sections, including two residential stays, in which the young people learn and develop their skills, followed by a two week social action project which allows them to give back and support their local community. The main role of the job included supporting and mentoring the participants, whilst facilitating activities. Together with the Assistant Team Leader, I was responsible for overseeing the programme and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. The job required a lot of initiative and adaptability.

    I worked part-time in a pub for three years as a barmaid and waitress. This taught me how to work effectively as part of a team, making sure everything was running smoothly. I was frequently trusted to run the pub on my own, and sometimes opened and closed, meaning that I had to use my initiative and shoulder a great deal of responsibility. Other duties included answering the phone and taking bookings, cash handling, cleaning jobs and even helping to organise events such as the pub quiz. This job was very sociable, and I feel that my communication skills flourished whilst I was working this job. I also was I particularly enjoyed working when it is very busy and I had loads of things to do as I thrive under pressure.

It was a great experience in which I feel I grew in maturity, and learnt what it is like commuting up to London every day.
