The Social Mobility Foundation is a charity that aims to improve social mobility for young people. My role, as an Aspiring Professionals Programme Coordinator, is central to the work of the Social Mobility Foundation, as I open up professions for those with the ability to join them in the future but without the means or networks to get there, primarily those from low-income backgrounds. My role involves:- Designing, planning, and presenting at, in-person and virtual events for our cohorts, to equip students with the skills and information they need to succeed in the professional world.- Liaising with external stakeholders to plan and organise various opportunities for SMF students, such as paid employment opportunities and insight days.- Taking on the role of sector lead for students in our Politics, and Digital sectors. I ensure that these students have the best possible access to resources such as job opportunities, regular bulletins which I produce, and sector-specific events.Find out more about The Social Mobility Foundation, and my organisation's work: https://www.socialmobility.org.uk/about-us/#content

Parliamentary Capability Coordinator

Jul 2021 - Nov 2022

London, England, United Kingdom
I scoped, designed and delivered training and learning resources (for example, virtual workshops and e-learning) to up-skill civil servants so that they could better understand the workings of Parliament. An exciting, rewarding and impactful role, as I helped to ensure that Civil Servants had a thorough understanding of Parliament so that they could effectively perform their duties.Day-to-day tasks included: - Engaging with attendees when hosting workshops, to ensure that their Parliamentary knowledge allowed them to effectively perform their role, i.e. on topics such as oral and written Parliamentary questions. - Applying my analytical skills to assess attendee feedback; interpreting feedback to implement positive changes in our training and learning resources. This ensured that my team's work was continuously changing and improving. This included leading on, and designing, a new evaluation strategy that saw us utilise focus group interviews for the first time. Senior Help & Support Assistant
-
Aug 2019 - Jun 2021
A rewarding and challenging supervisory role; I was promoted to the role of Senior Help & Support Assistance, after demonstrating impressive work in my previous role. As well as the duties and tasks described below (see ‘Help & Support Assistant’), I supervised a team of 15 Help & Support Assistants, leading them to ensure students received the highest standard of support. As a result, I have developed strong interpersonal and leadership skills, in order to be able to effectively manage my team. Working during the covid-19 pandemic, I also adapted and responded to the fresh, and heightened challenges this brought in supporting students. This included an increase in serious mental health issues amongst students, coordinating students' access to emergency food parcels, and helping students access funds to combat the loss of employment.I was responsible for coordinating the 'Draw the Line' campaign, which aims to raise awareness of hate crime and harassment on the University campus.

Help & Support Assistant
-
Aug 2018 - Aug 2019
Much of this role was frontline work, assisting the 38,000+ students of Leeds University, and helping with their queries and problems. Many of these queries were from students dealing with a range of complex issues, including those seeking mental health support, and those wanting advice on navigating student housing, and tenancy contracts. As such, I am experienced in handling sensitive data, and issues, and offering relevant advice on such matters. The role was often emotionally challenging, as students often approached me with unique and complex issues; however, it was also extremely rewarding, as I was able to make a positive impact on students’ lives.

Global Climate Change Campaign UK is a student-led international initiative, led by the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations, to raise awareness, transform communities and tackle the effects of climate change.During this role, I was a committee member (Social Media Manager) for the UK branch, based in Leeds. This has involved collaborating with other committee members to organise initiatives and events for the campaign. For example, arranging an art and music exhibition night to promote the campaign, and holding stalls on the University campus, to work towards our main aim of reducing the negative effects of climate change. This was also achieved through working with, and lobbying, the Student Union to promote better glass recycling in Leeds. In addition, it also involved everyday administrative duties, such as running the social media accounts, replying to contacts via phone calls and emails, arranging a weekly meeting with fellow committee members and managing the varying diaries of fellow committee members.

During my time at Sixth Form, I also balanced my studies with a part-time job as a retail assistant at the busy Market Street branch of Primark. I worked as part of a team to complete tasks, such as putting out new stock and keeping the shop floor tidy. I served on the till, which involved communicating with customers to ensure they had found everything they were looking for in the store, as well as informing them of competitions and promotions. Assisting customers with any problems or inquiries, such as aiding the customer if they required another size, or were unable to find the right product.
