I qualified young as a Chartered Accountant – actually, probably as young as any in Australia at the time, considering that post-graduate qualification could only be conferred after attaining a necessary minimum period of relevant supervised work experience within the office of a Chartered Accountants! This is not, of itself, a test of intelligence, but rather commitment. And it explains how I was so relatively young when establishing my own practice in 1978 after having worked for 6 years in Sydney, including the last 2 years in the specialist tax division of Cooper & Lybrand (now PwC).Over the years, practising back in my home town, I have volunteered to take on lead roles in a range of Upper Hunter community organisation, applying my ethical, professional accounting and commercial skills. These roles have extended beyond the obligations of every dedicated parent in fostering the education and career development of their own children.
